Welcome to the Solar Calculator. Your task is to figure out how many square feet of solar panels are needed to power a house or specific household items. An energy need in Kilowatt Hours per month (kWh/month) will be provided for you to try and calculate the corresponding square footage of solar panels needed to completely power a house.
If you wish to create a list of specific household items to power, click on "Create custom power requirement". A list of common household items will appear that you can select to create your custom power needs.

Each city has a different amount of average light available to power the solar panels. Select the nearest city to you to provide an accurate light reading. The values given are for the low value of hours of sunlight in a given city. The low value is used to make sure that the proper amount of solar panels are installed to power the home in months where sunlight is not optimal.

Use the formula below to calculate how many square feet of solar panels are required to fill the power requirement.

kWh monthly = (((s * 15 watts)*c) * 31 days)/1000
s=square feet of solar panels
c=low value of daily hours of sunlight in a given city
